DIAGNOSIS

Amyloid PET Scan

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a minimally-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure used to distinguish normal from diseased tissue in conditions such as cancer, ischemic heart disease, and some neurologic disorders. In amyloid PET imaging, a ligand that binds to a given targeted substrate is labeled with a radioisotope. Amyloid PET imaging uses a class of radiopharmaceuticals that detect levels of amyloid in the human brain. Measurements of cerebral amyloid is clinically useful in the work up and management of patients with cognitive impairment who are being evaluated for possible Alzheimer's disease or other causes of cognitive decline.

What to Expect

Amyloid Plaque PET CT Scan

Process:

  1. When you arrive at Perigon Imaging for your PET scan, your care team will check your blood sugar. Then, an IV line will be started and a tracer will be administered. This allows the PET scan to show potential plaque on your brain. The tracer does not cause any side effects or pain.

  2. Once you’re ready to start, the scan will take only 10-15 minutes.

  3. Results will be known within 24 hours.
